BEST OF 2011

ALRIGHT!
Sorry for the huge delay on this year end list! Things have been odd around the Kind Turkey offices. Swamped and changing. I’ve added sounds to all the best LPs of the year that are new releases (not reissues…so basically the Reatards reissue doesn’t have sound samples. Sue me. You should know Teenage Hate by now…). And the singles I’ve left sounds off of to force you lazy asses to get off yr butts and buy some records. But anyways! Figured this list is better late than never…so here goes a list that I finished months ago but never got around to posting…jeesh!

BEST LPS of 2011
1. TV GhostMass Dream (In The Red)

Best record of the year for sure. Dark, moody and gloomy. HAUNTING. Keeps me coming back and keeps me excited. Still hear and find new surprises on this record that I either missed the first time or straight up forgot about.
“Wired Trap” by TV Ghost by forcefieldpr

2. Thee Oh SeesCastlemania (In The Red)

My favorite Oh Sees LP of the year. I think it’s a better pop record than the jammier Carrion Crawler/The Dream LP. Both are essential. This one just moved me more. Some of the best songwriting of Dwyer’s career is on this record. DO NOT MISS THIS RELEASE!
Thee Oh Sees “I Need Seed” by PureHoney: FREE SOUND!

3. UV RaceHomo (In The Red)

This was a sneaker for me. I get the Australia thing. Rambling psychopath vocals over droney driving bass and thin guitar. Yeah I totally dig that, but honestly it had been rubbing me the wrong way the last year or so. Seemed so played out considering we keep getting bombarded by the same musicians from there doing the same thing over and over (Minus the almighty Total Control!). This is fresh to me. This is exciting.
002 – uv race ( the ) – girl in my head by turboslimane

4. Bare WiresCheap Perfume (Southpaw)

Kind Turkey fave’s Bare Wires are AT IT AGAIN! This time with a 10 inch platter of pop garage perfection. Melton once again proves he can hang with the best of em and actually show those kids a thing or two. Plus two Kind Turkers lent their vocals/clapping for this record! :D
Bare Wires – Television Girls by southpawrecs

5. Yussuf JerusalemBlast From The Past (Florida’s Dying)

Varied. That’s what this record is. It’s dark and haunting and might not be quite as good as the first YJ LP, but damn if it’s not pretty fucking good.
Yussuf Jerusalem – “At The End Of The World” on Florida’s Dying Records by kindturkeyrecords

6. OBN III’sThe One And Only (Tic Tac Totally)

Garage-punk done absolutely right. Loud, raw, unhinged and completely ridiculous at times (in a great way). Vocals that sear from frontman Orville Neeley (OBN the Third HIMSELF!). You may recognize Orville from countless amazing Austin bands…see also Bad Sports, A Giant Dog, ETC. This is THEE garage-punk record of 2011.
OBN III’s – “If the Shit Fits” by covertcuriosity

7. Dum Dum GirlsOnly In Dreams (Sub Pop)

Another great record from Dee Dee and Co. This time it steps up the production (still a ton of reverb). Proving Dee Dee isn’t just a pretty girl who’s going to come and go in the drop of the pin. She’ll be around with this outfit a while…I think…
Dum Dum Girls – Bedroom Eyes by subpop

8. The Midwest BeatGone Not Lost (Dusty Medical)

A Wisconsin instant psych garage classic among the likes of The Goodnight Loving. Gritty rock n roll garage with country and power-pop inflections. In a smart move the band never steps into the wussy power pop territory and never really gets all hick countryesque. Keeping it Rock n Roll through and through, but still showing some influences on their sleeves. A must own for fans of the Kinks, The Nerves and CCR.

9. Thee Oh SeesCarrion Crawler/The Dream (In The Red)

Thee Oh Sees second full length of 2011 was a monster. The drums are crazy, the guitar spirals and the vocals trail and trail and trail. Just like a classy heavy Oh Sees record should. Sometimes I like it when Dwyer strips it down, and sometimes I like it when he rocks that shit out! This is the latter and it does indeed rock!
Thee Oh Sees – “Carrion Crawler” by rockedition

10. ReatardsTeenage Hate Reissue Double LP (Goner)

What a really beautiful reissue. Everything about this is fantastic…from the classic album (plus extras) to the immaculate gatefold packaging. A really nice release from one of the best garage labels ever…period. This record will cement the previous statement for years to come.

11. Night Beats – S/T (Trouble in Mind)

A psych-garage masterpiece on one of the most promising garage-pop label going…Chicago’s Trouble In Mind. This record is slightly heavier and droney than the label’s previous output, but it’s still pop enough to fit on the label. Definite 60′s influence from flower power punks to NY hipster VUers. Did I say this was a heavy and droney pop record? Don’t get lost in the verb.
The Night Beats – Aint Dumbo by PressWolfPR

12. MickeyRock n Roll Dreamer (Hozac)

A glammy sleazy romp of a good time! Chicago punk with elements of T. Rex, all as sleazy as you can imagine. “She’s So Crazy” might be the best song in years!
MICKEY ‘For You’ by HOZAC RECORDS

13. Sex ChurchGrowing Over (Load)

Shoegaze for the drugged out masses. Elements of drone, garage, fuzz and just plain old noise make this band one of the finest examples of fantastic expansive mood setting music.
Growing Over by Sex Church

14. Indian WarsA Walk Around The Park (Bachelor Records)

Folky garage rock n roll. Elements of Dylan, The Oblivians and Demon Claws rolled into one big spliff. Set on fire and enjoy!
Indian Wars – Took A Trip by gimp-o-rama

15. Useless Eaters Daily Commute (Tic Tac Totally)

Angular new-wavey punk w/ huge but well-hidden Reatard influence. Seth’s got his own thing going and definitely deserves his time to shine outside of the Reatard connection. Really well crafted offkilter punk. Some of the most unique and fun lead lines you’ll hear in 2011.
“Take Advantage Of Me” by USELESS EATERS on TIC TAC TOTALLY RECORDS! by kindturkeyrecords

16. Thee CormansHalloween Record (In The Red)

Scuzzy fuzzy garage surf slop. Humorous and cutting. An acid trip for people already strung out on benzies and mountains of meth.
Thee Cormans – “Open The Gates” by forcefieldpr

17. Acid Baby Jesus – S/T (Slovenly)

A psych garage stomper! Rock n Roll from Greece! These kids can party and rock!

18. White Faces – S/T (Windian)
60s revisited pop-punk (not THAT pop-punk), with a huge serving of 70′s glam ALA current day brethren Cheap Time. Almost as good as the first Cheap Time record….almost. A really great record from a band that’s already sadly missed!
WHITE FACES – AIN’T HAVIN’ ME by WINDIAN RECORDS

19. Head On ElectricSleep Slaughter Sleep (Dusty Medical)

Heavy countrified garage grunge. Songs that have unique structures, tempo changes, chantesque background vocals and varied production. This is a really unique record that sets this band apart from most of the other bands in the Milwaukee scene.
More Sheep Than Yellow by Head On Electric by kindturkeyrecords

20. Yuck – S/T (Fat Possum)

My Bloody Valentine for the completely inattentive 2011 generation? Yes please! Part Sonic Youth part MBV part way poppier than either of those bands ever get. That’s the part that keeps me interested.
Milkshake by Yuck

Honorable mention:
Ty SegallLive in Aisle Five tied with The Singles Comp tied with Goodbye Bread (Southpaw, Drag City)

The live record is pretty gnarly and that’s what’s great about Ty (The Singles Comp falls into this as well). Goodbye Bread is pretty not gnarly. It’s a good record, and one that I definitely think Ty needed to make after giving us 3 LPs worth of his take on scuzz-garage. GB is a cleaner more 70′s version of Ty, and sadly one that makes me a little sleepy. The live LP is the opposite of that….And Ty made sure you’d pay attention that that fucker by dropping in tape speed changes in post-editing. Gnarly! The Singles Comp reminds you of the wunderkind’s roots (while somehow feeling a bit long-winded by the end of it). It’s a great comp for anyone looking to hear those now long out of print early singles on vinyl without having to spend the 40 bucks a pop that some of those early singles fetch on ebay.
Ty Segall – my sunshine by greasytrouts

BEST SINGLES of 2011:
1. Ty Segall - “Spiders” (Drag City)

YES! This 7″ blew my mind after what I would call a semi-limp LP (Goodbye Bread). This is what I wanted him to make on Goodbye Bread, but this probably wouldn’t have translated very well as a long-player. Here’s to hoping the next Ty record burns and bubbles like this one!

2. Feral Beat – “Cold Lover” (Tic Tac Totally)

Seth Sutton (Useless Eaters) is at it again! This time with drummer Allison Waid in tow for a lo-fi surfy garage number! Less new-wavey than Seth’s Useless Eaters project, but still just as catchy! After a slew of Useless Eaters singles and LPs you definitely know what to expect from this garage-rock child prodigy…and yet it still excites me every time I hear something new by this kid! And it’s got the best cover art on any 7″ this year!

3. Head On Electric - “Ghost Hunter” (Terror Trash)

A GREAT cut by one of Milwaukee’s most promising young bands! How this didn’t make it to the LP is beyond me. The packaging has some of the nicest artwork on any 7″ I’ve seen in a long time. Really great drawing and it has a really limited edition feel with the special DIY hand-made jackets that look anything BUT cheap.

4. The Midwest Beat - “Back To Mono” EP (Eradicator)

A nice EP platter that gives you an insight into the band’s psyche…This band is FULL of songwriters! Pop jangle meets weirdo psych frills. Bells and whistles included.

5. OBN III’s - S/T 7″ (Tic Tac Totally)

THEE original Tic Tac Totally introduction to the madness spewing forth from Orville and Co down in Austin! This is a quick three song burner that is an ENTIRELY necessary companion piece to the band’s debut LP, The One And Only. Starts off with what has to be the most rock n roll guitar solo intro I’ve heard in a long time. You must check out this band!
